Ferric methanesulfonate as an effective and environmentally sustainable lixiviant for Zn extraction from sphalerite (ZnS)

چکیده

Zinc is currently extracted from sphalerite (ZnS) by either sintering-smelting or roasting-leaching. These high-temperature processes produce environmentally hazardous sulfur dioxide gas. Hence, sustainable zinc extraction calls for direct leaching at low temperatures. Here, we show that ferric methanesulfonate a high performing lixiviant this purpose. Using 0.8 M methanesulfonate, 99.3% Zn was 106−150 μm particles after 70 °C 96 h. Elemental sulfur, rather than dioxide, produced as by-product. When compared to common inorganic lixiviants such sulfate chloride, demonstrates greater efficiency and less corrosive, toxic, does not release harmful gases. Mineralogical, microscopical, compositional characterization of reaction products confirmed the formation core–shell structure consisting core shell, manifestation coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mineral replacement mechanism. Efficient facilitated interconnected pores in which provided pathways mass transfer between core. The precipitation anglesite (PbSO4), some instances caused surface passivation through infilling shells, suggests Pb2+ concentration should be controlled when applying extraction.

Cystoseira Gibraltarica Extract as an Environmentally Sustainable Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl Medium

This study set out to examine the cystoseira gibraltarica extract (CG) as an environmentally sustainable corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl medium. The corrosion inhibiting effect has been studied by conventional methods such as gravimetric (weight loss) and electrochemical (EIS and PDP) methods. All the methods used in this study confirm that cystoseira gibraltarica extract has ...

A Biological Production of ZnS (Sphalerite) Nanoparticles with Desulfovibrio gigas

Sulfur-/sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been used for remediation of metalcontaminated ground water and soil through the precipitation of metal sulfides. These metal sulfides range from 3 nm to 3 μm in diameter. Of specific interest to this research are zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnS NPs) produced by SRBs with a diameter of ~3 nm. These ZnS NPs can be used as catalysts to grow nano-wires,...

Bacteriophage-Based Bacterial Wilt Biocontrol for an Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture

Bacterial wilt diseases caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, R. pseudosolanacearum, and R. syzygii subsp. indonesiensis (former R. solanacearum species complex) are among the most important plant diseases worldwide, severely affecting a high number of crops and ornamentals. Difficulties of bacterial wilt control by non-biological methods are related to effectiveness, bacterial resistance and envir...

Towards environmentally sustainable human behaviour: targeting non-conscious and conscious processes for effective and acceptable policies

Meeting climate change targets to limit global warming to 2°C requires rapid and large reductions in demand for products that most contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These include production of bulk materials (e.g. steel and cement), energy supply (e.g. fossil fuels) and animal source foods (particularly ruminants and their products). Effective strategies to meet these targets requir...
